A realtor has reported a rise in local and non-residential real estate queries, backed by Fiji’s exceptional containment policies and strict quarantine regulations against COVID-19.
Baron Bruno owner of Nadi-based Professionals Fiji Real Estate, made the comment, following questions from SunBiz.
“Fiji has done a remarkable job at keeping everyone safe and keeping COVID-19 out of the public domain,” Mr Bruno said.
“These strong and effective mechanisms will pay long-term dividends by giving foreigners and repatriating Fijians added comfort and stability.”
Mr Bruno forecasts a rebound in the Fiji real estate market.
Challenges
Some of the biggest challenges seem to be self-inflicted, Mr Bruno said.
“By this, I mean over-taxation, stringent regulations, and pessimism, which might cause a longer recovery period,” he said.
“We are working Govermment ministers, senior government departments, Nadi Chamber of Commerce, U.S. Embassy, and key stakeholders in the business and real estate communities, to find solutions and maximise operational efficiencies,” Mr Bruno said.
“Fiji must now compete with countries all over the world to seduce savvy investors, pensioners/retirees, international business executives, and “work from home” entrepreneurs.
“All are looking to make significant lifestyle changes.
“If we can make their transition here easier and more attractive, everyone in this country will benefit.
“We are very excited for Fiji’s future.”
The agency
The agency has been in Fiji since 2008, and was part of the recognised Professionals name in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.
“Even though we are based in Denarau, we have realised that due to the pandemic, many real estate owners here in Fiji have been either forced to sell, or have decided to reunite with their families overseas.
“Since we’ve had so many listings and properties coming for sale, we concentrated our 2020 efforts to secure international property listing partnerships.
“In that way, we were allowed to promote our Fijian property to buyers and investors on over 100 websites, and social media portals in over 61 countries.
“Our extensive international experience, massive personal network in the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia, award-winning leadership and real estate results have allowed us to make a significantly positive impact here.”
Teamwork
Mr Bruno said Fiji’s well-respected influential partners give real estate clients the confidence to buy and invest here.
“It is absolutely critical,” he said.
“Craig Strong, chief executive officer of of Investment Fiji, Gerald Barrack, former chairman of Fiji Sugar Corporation and Air Pacific, the Real Estate Agents Licensing Board(REALB) team, resort-hotel general managers, Fiji Airways, local philanthropic leaders, among others, have been instrumental in educating the agency over how things get done.”
Foreign preceptions
According to Mr Bruno, foreign perceptions of Fiji ranged from it being an island in Japan, to being makers of the popular Fiji Water brand with no clue of where the Pacific island was located on the map.
“We were surprised at how few Americans especially in California, where we come from, were familiar with Fiji,” he said.
“Those aware of Fiji know that it has some of the best surfing this planet has to offer, plus world-class soft coral diving, epic big game fishing and gorgeous beaches.
“Tourism Fiji does a superb job, as does the Fiji Sun, of keeping people informed and educated about the natural wonders of Fiji.
Expedite measures
Mr Bruno said measures to expedite Fiji’s recovery included letting the international community know that Fiji was open for business and was actively encouraging foreign and local real estate investment.
“If possible, ease restrictions, rules, taxes and regulations.
“This would send an incredibly positive message to the world, many of who are still deciding where they want to retire.
“Some are trying to decide where to buy their holiday home, set up their “work from home” business, expand their philanthropic enterprise, and go on their next “post-COVID” vacation(s).”
Mr Bruno said: “If we all work together, stay positive, optimistic, and embrace Tourism Fiji’s “Sota Tale” campaign, we can welcome our new “Fiji Family” back when the borders open with a resilient, loud, and proud, “Bula.”
