Professionals Fiji Real Estate owner and codirector Baron Bruno said a partnership between the Fiji Government and local businesses for passport lotteries would boost its global presence.
Mr Bruno made the suggestion during the Nadi Business Forum on Friday at the Ratsun Hotel in Nadi.
“Has the Government ever talked about or considered doing a passport lottery and when I say a passport lottery, it’s not selling out to Americans or to Chinese or to Russians or anything like that, it’s the Government of Fiji and the business community looking at where the voids are, where are the vacuums ,” he said.
“In real estate, maybe it’s the civil engineers, structural engineers, electricians, plumbers, joiners.
“We need to identify what is Fiji lacking, then what can we benefit from and then have those people pay to come here to Fiji to join the economy and contribute financially.
“This in terms of taxes, increasing employment by hiring staff.
“I don’t know if they’re still in existence, but incentivising government workers in the civil service, educating them and saying, ‘if you take these classes we can increase your wage by five cents an hour, ten cents an hour or 20 cents an hour’.”
He said this would encourage skilled workers to further their education.
“The better educated they get, the more upskilling they get, and they rise up the ranks and they know the system because they have received the training on the job and they are now hopefully empowering and inspiring other people,” he said.
He suggested that Government use popular social media influencers to market Fiji globally through digital nomad visas.
“We talk about problems with people leaving the country.
“Who are the people that we taught that probably could really use the most – it’s the young people, the people who understand technology, digitisation, modernisation socio economic policies, on where Fiji fits in the global aspect and with a global mindset. So has the government of Fiji considered digital nomad visa?” he asked.
